Questions family caregivers often ask us

What can Helios Care do for my loved one?

The experts at Helios Care tailor their services to keep your loved one at home safely and comfortably despite serious illness. Whatever their specific condition, Helios Care provides the right care at the right time to improve quality of life.

What can Helios Care do for me and my family?

Helios Care gives you more time to be “family” instead of “caregiver.” Our scheduled visits can replace a lot of visits to doctors’ offices and hospitals. We also help with a lot of activities of daily living – like bathing, dressing and eating – freeing you up to have more quality time with your loved one. And with phone support available 24/7, expert assistance is always just a call away.

How is Helios Hospice Care paid for?

Helios Hospice Care is typically covered in full by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies. So there are usually no copays and no surprise bills.

How do I talk to my loved one about going on Helios Care?

Many people have the misperception that hospice or palliative care means “giving up.” The opposite is true. Both hospice care and palliative care offer highly specialized services that do more to keep patients comfortably and safely at home. Talk with your loved one about the advantages Helios Care offers – greater comfort, quality of life and being at home where they prefer to be.

How does Helios Care support our family values and traditions?

You and your loved one are in charge of the services Helios Care provides. We honor your preferences and wishes as long as they don’t compromise safety or well-being. Helios Care also offers specialized programs such as StoryKeeper to help preserve your loved one’s legacy through storytelling. Plus, we help celebrate special occasions and spiritual traditions in your loved one’s life.

How can Helios Care help me and my family emotionally?

One of the greatest benefits Helios Care brings is peace-of-mind. With our expert care and support always available, you can breathe easier as a caregiver. We also have experienced counselors who provide emotional support through our caregiver support groups, one-on-one counseling and personalized grief support for adults and children.

How does Helios Care help me get the most support for my family?

The Helios Care team can help with what can be time-consuming tasks of coordinating support from other resources. We can provide assistance in insurance paperwork, coordinating care with your loved one’s physicians, updating and filling prescriptions, and connecting with other relevant community resources such as the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

How does Helios Care tailor services for my loved one’s needs and wishes?

Our expert team considers the whole person – body, mind and spirit – not just the illnesses affecting your loved one. We personalize care for every aspect of your loved one’s life. We can help your loved one preserve their legacy creatively through art, music, scrapbooking, storytelling, and spiritual or family rituals. Helios Care even offers specialized programs such as We Honor Veterans that recognizes the lives of those who served our country and meets their unique needs during life’s final months.

How can Helios Care help plan for my loved one’s future needs?

Planning for the future as an illness progresses is very important. Our team can help your loved one complete an Advance Directive – a document that puts in writing what they want or don’t want regarding their care, medical treatments and other vital topics. It’s a great gift to the family, especially if you haven’t discussed such matters and want to know your loved one’s exact desires and instructions. You can even get started with a helpful tool called Five Wishes.

Understanding differences between hospice care and palliative care

Hospice Care

is designed to maximize comfort and quality of life for patients who have about six months or less to live.

Palliative Care

is designed to relieve pain, stress and other symptoms of serious illness, whatever the diagnosis or stage of the disease.

Hospice Care
focuses on providing comfort and is not combined with further treatments to cure an illness.
Palliative Care

is often used in combination with curative treatments. In fact, it can be very effective in relieving side effects of curative care.

Hospice Care

care is typically covered in full by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies. Financial assistance may be available if needed.

Palliative Care

is paid for in a variety of ways. If you have concerns about the cost or coverage by your insurance plan for Helios Palliative Care, a member of our team can help you determine if there will be out-of-pocket costs.

Hospice Care
is provided by our team of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, personal care aides and social workers.
Palliative Care
care is provided by a specially trained nurse practitioner and a clinical social worker if needed.
Hospice Care
is provided wherever the patient calls home – whether a private residence, assisted living facility or nursing home.
Palliative Care
provides in-home assessments, recommendations and guidance at the patient’s home.
Hospice Care
patients typically receive home visits ranging from once every two weeks to multiple visits each week depending on individual needs.
Palliative Care

patients will have an initial assessment then typically receive visits once a month. Phone support is available 24/7 for urgent needs and to answer questions.
